Plot Summary Like many young girls, Nell resents having to do the family chores. What she really looks forward to are the weekly visits from Helen, a family friend. Helen is "in service," which Nell imagines to be wonderful. After all, doesn't she live in a big house? And isn't she always bringing beautiful clothes for Nell's family? When Nell grows up, she wants to be "in service," just like Helen. Over the course of the story, Nell goes to visit Helen in the big house and comes to understand what "in service" really means, while at the same time gaining a greater understanding of herself. Based on a story by black Nova Scotia teacher and writer Maxine Tynes, In Service brings one aspect of the Nova Scotia black experience vividly to life. |
